SOMEDAY

One can hardly fault a message inside a Dove chocolate candy wrapper. “Make 'someday' today."   I have always had a 'someday' list of things I want to do; plan to do.  I am off to do one of my 'someday' things to do.  Yes, I am off to Portland, Oregon to the Portland Rose festival.  The festival was on my list and I will get a chance to see the Test Rose garden in its full glory.  I have a new digital camera that I hope to take lots of snapshots of roses and more roses with.  You will get to see those next month.

Yesterday, I finally got my vegetable garden planted; heavy on the tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach and chard.  A row of edible pod peas and pole beans rounds it all out.  The deer had already visited the garden and had been tangled in the string row markers.  You can see the dainty little hoof prints in the soft soil.  My winter guests seem to have decided this would be a good place to spend the summer.  Darn....

My four tree peonies have huge buds and promise to be spectacular.  I am afraid I am going to miss the big show here.  This year, the spring flower blooms stayed a lovely long time, due to the cool damp weather.  Hostas like the cool and damp as well.  I have four new hostas sitting in their pots awaiting their new home in the cool damp in back of my home.  Tomorrow....

The Galmour Gertie birthday party was lots of fun.  I promised my friends a menu of the goodies, which were based on a Spanish cookbook for Tapas.  Tapas is the Spanish term for appetizer.  Two bottles of wine, red and white, and two bottles of Italian soda as starters.  In Spain you can go into any taverna or cafe and find tapas.  You pick what you would like and the bartender makes a tally.  I served: Spanish potato omelet, marinated carrot salad, marinated olives, deviled eggs, bits of bbq chicken breast, shrimp cocktail, tuna salad, marinated feta cheese cubes, sliced cheese, French bread, crackers, salsa and avocado dip, bowl of fresh strawberries, dish of almonds and chocolate covered peanuts.  My friend, Suzanne, brought pepper jelly on cream cheese.  My friend Ellie brought a tasty lentil snack.  To end it all, there was pistachio bundt cake with a chocolate glaze.  Oh, I almost forgot I made a batch of marinated fresh mushrooms.  I like anything you’d call a pickle....

As I have been reading through the news publications, I see there has been a number of really positive things being written about and being done to reduce the effect of greenhouse gas. Everyone wants to help and will do their part.  I have always believed the key is leadership.  Give a list of things to do and people will do it.  The AARP newsletter has a  “ready to go” green list for its 39 million members in 24 million households.  What I’d like to do is a new segment to pass on suggestions.  I am after all the Aarde Moeder/earth mother.

I hope that you have a 'someday' list and plan to make that someday be today.

Remember to be kind, speak the truth and eat good food.  Yours truly, your Aarde Moeder.
