Summer Gardens 2007 My summer garden is now in bloom with brown-eyed susans, day lilies, marigolds and my hostas; all seem to be trying to out do one another. The hosta blooms away meaning a little extra work to do. After the flowers drop, you have the tall stems sticking out of the lovely big or little plants. I don’t really want them to self seed so I prune away the the stems. Tidy up. The tomatoes have started to ripen which means Greek salads or juicy bread salad, bacon. tomato, & lettuce sandwiches, cucumber & tomato salad. My husbands favorite salad is one I make with sliced cucumbers, chopped tomatoes, lots of thin slices of sweet onion, a few thin bits of green pepper and you just mix it all with mayonnaise with a little sugar, salt & pepper. My lettuce has all bolted to seed from the 90 degree days and I haven’t bothered to plant a second crop. Lazy, yes I admit it. But with tomatoes to eat who cares...
Now is a good time to start with plans for fall and next year's planting. I stood out on the deck looking at my small garden kingdom. I have some over grown individuals in the back garden. The 4th element of garden design is growth. Trouble can mean slow or no growth. Then there are those who thrive and become too much. Always changing that is what makes it fun/challenging/exciting. Often things can change overnight or when I have been traveling for business for three days...WOW. Instead of writing about cookbooks and authors, I want to tell you about a magazine that I subscribe to, Fine Cooking. You can read more at www.finecooking.com. There is also Fine Gardening and a whole line of publications. I like Fine Cooking because of the lack of advertising which makes it more expensive. Each issue is a "keeper" with recipes, educational information, all things foodie. I don’t consider myself a "foodie." I am someone who values good food for health and happiness. If you read my columns you already know that, RIGHT. I always ask you to please be kind, eat good food and speak the truth. Paula Deen of the Food Network wishes everyone one "best dishes". You All...I’ll talk about Paula next month. I just received, in my mail, a fall 2007 garden catalog from Burgess Seed & Plant company Bloomington, IL ( www.eburgess.com ). They have a five tree peony collection for $59.75 in red, purple, pink, white and yellow. I love the three tree peonies that I have and I think I paid $50.00 for my first one. I think I am definitely interested, now where did I put my purse and credit cards. Hey, later my dear friends. Bye! Dateline July 29, 2007
