FAKE SUNRISE I had one of those moments of bewildered disbelief when I switched on the television early one morning and found (What A fake!) a staged and recorded sunrise. Low and behold, you could view a sunrise, a beautiful tree lined pond with water lilies, frogs and bird song. The sun peaking through the trees. I thought to myself, "What has become of this world?" It doesn’t take too much to get yourself out of bed and go see the real thing. RIGHT? A new level of lame presented itself to me. I remember making a pointed effort to see the sunrise on January 1, 2000...the dawn of the new millennium. My daughter April, my dear friend Judy, and I had a small bonfire in my front yard to celebrate the moment. The next millennium will be 992 years from now. But a FAKE SUNRISE. Oh, ya. Today you can get videos of flicking fireplaces with Christmas carols. You can buy videos of birds for your cat to watch if you don’t have a window. Probably you’d find one that would entertain your dog, as well. I suppose if there is fake sunrise, a fake sunset exists also. I have experienced memorable sunsets in the Florida Keys and from my deck in back of our home. A FAKE SUNRISE...Oh, Ya. I need only to close my eyes and reflect on the most grand sunrise of all times. My husband and I were camping in a little county park on the western shore of Lake Michigan. I walked down to the pump area to get some water to make coffee. The sun was about to just come up from the horizon across the lake; red, orange, yellow. The sun rose as the phoenix, in only a few minutes. Moving in awestruck...a REAL SUNRISE. AH, yes....
As for garden advice, I am in short supply. The piles of snow and ice are not inspirational. I did get out to pick up branches and make an assessment of other damage. Lots of little piles of deer dropping all over in the back yard. Shrubs that have been snacked on by deer and rodents. We saw the deer every night as they came to the bird feeder by the back door. Tough winter for everyone... I am trying to plan a birthday party for a friend in my coffee group. One morning I was having a discussion with a friend's daughter about the things I have in my wardrobe that I haven’t had an occasion wear. I call them "glamour gertie" goods. I guess part of me is attracted to things that are shiny and beautiful. I thought I might try to create an occasion to b-day and glitz? Why not??? I seem to remember one of my favorite things to play as a child was "dress-up." Clump around in my mothers high heeled shoes. The attic held a big box of old dresses, hats and shoes. Maybe, I need to play dress up.... Potluck: Home Cooking From Wisconsin’s Community Cookbooks is my latest cookbook purchase by Toni Brandeis Streckert. Cookbook collecting is a passion of mine and I especially like older church or organization books. Tried and true recipes submitted by persons devoted to feeding their families. I once read about a family who’s mother was in the hospital and a friend came and prepared a meal. The family was amazed to have their favorite dishes. Simple, replied the friend, I just used the most soiled and sticky recipe cards and pages in the cook book. If you could see some of my files, many are nearly unreadable because of stains. I Love it.. I guess I have gone on about this and that for long enough. I have not tried any recipes from the new cookbook. I have my eye on a Spicy Tomato Bread recipe, check back next month. For now my dear friends, remember to be kind, speak the truth and eat good food. Yours respectfully, the Aarde Moeder. April 1, 2008
